Oxfordshire County Council’s Digital Transformation: Modernised Tree Management with TreePlotter

OVERVIEW

Oxfordshire County Council, responsible for trees across a historic and complex landscape, manages 3,200 miles of roads and approximately 400,000 highway trees, across a land area of more than 1000 square miles. In addition, the County Council manages ~150,000 trees throughout their land and asset portfolio. The council sought an innovative way to modernise and streamline tree care requirements to comply with statutory duties. By
embracing TreePlotter, they not only modernised operations but also set a new benchmark for public sector tree care.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

INCREASED EFFICIENCY: TreePlotter maximises data collection utilising Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to improve oversight resulting in increased quality and quantity of tree inspections.

ENHANCED COLLABORATION: Improved sharing of tree information and responsiveness to insurance claims, and strengthened collaboration with parish councils.

MODERNISED OPERATIONS: Shifting from antiquated software with significant limitations to a GIS web-based system has reduced errors and maximised a limited resource to deliver more.

AUTOMATED WORKFLOW: Use and oversight of work orders, assigning tasks to contractors with integrated pricing, and tracking completion rates leading to improved communication, efficiency, and accountability.

OPERATIONAL CLARITY: Features for work auditing, live updates to tree care records, and managing operational teams further strengthened aboricultural understanding, transparency, and decision-making.

IMPACT

  1. Set a new standard for public sector tree management.
  2. Improve transparency and communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  3. Enhance operational efficiency and accountability.

s custodians of our community’s trees, we’re entrusted to make objective, balanced decisions about their care across the entire county. It’s important to us that our residents understand not just what actions we’re taking, but also the reasoning behind those decisions—we want to be transparent and share our approach so everyone can see the rationale guiding our work.
