TreeD Hybrid Tree Inventory
The Next-Generation Mobile LiDAR Tree Inventory Model
TreeD Mobile LiDAR Tree Inventories
Integrating Mobile LiDAR Automation with Arborist Expertise
TreeD™ Inventory combines high-resolution mobile LiDAR, 360° imaging, and ISA Certified Arborist expertise in a modern, hybrid approach to urban tree data. It automates large-scale tree detection and measurements, then refines results with expert review to deliver scalable, reliable, and often more cost-effective inventories than traditional field-only methods. Integrated with TreePlotter™, TreeD turns complex point clouds into actionable maps and metrics, letting cities re-scan, refresh automation, and iterate arborist validation over time so inventories stay current and support trend analysis without starting from scratch.
LiDAR Scanning
Vehicle-mounted LiDAR and 360° cameras capture high‑res 3D data, including trees, vegetation near power lines, and surrounding infrastructure.
Automated Inventory
Algorithms transform the point cloud into an initial tree inventory, identifying trees and calculating diameter, height, crown volume, and more.
Arborist Expertise
ISA Certified Arborists review and refine the automated results, adding expert validation, additional management insights, and targeted field checks.
TreePlotter Integration
The validated data is loaded into TreePlotter as a live system of record for ongoing updates, planning, reporting, and day-to-day urban forest operations.
The Value of Mobile LiDAR Tree Inventories
Smarter, more actionable tree data than traditional inventories.
Scale, Speed, and Cost Efficiency
- Capture citywide tree, planting site, utility, and streetscape data in weeks at often lower cost than field-only inventories.
- Re-scan regularly to keep inventories current, not one-time.
Shared data for the whole city
- Serve forestry, transportation, utilities, parks, planning, and climate teams from one LiDAR capture.
- Align tree management with other infrastructure using a shared dataset and 3D digital twin access.
Rich, defensible tree intelligence
- Produce consistent height, crown, structure, and planting site attributes with supporting rasters.
- Use arborist QA/QC so data stands up to risk and funding decisions.
Operational, flexible, and future-ready
- Push inventory data directly into TreePlotter for work orders, inspections, reporting, and updates.
- Tailor scope and standards while the LiDAR–automation–arborist–TreePlotter loop keeps data current.

How Mobile LiDAR Tree Inventories Work
A Continuous, Update-Ready Inventory Workflow.
LiDAR Scanning
TreeD begins with mobile LiDAR data collection using vehicle-mounted scanners and 360-degree cameras to capture precise 3D streetscape data at city scale in a short time window. This produces a detailed digital twin of public rights-of-way, including tree structure, adjacent vegetation conflicts, available planting space, and grey infrastructure needed to support cross-departmental use cases.
Automated Inventory
Specialized processing and feature-extraction algorithms are then applied to the point cloud and imagery to automatically identify and plot trees and related assets and calculate core attributes such as location, diameter, height, crown dimensions, and other structural metrics. This automated step delivers a fast, highly accurate, and consistent baseline inventory that can be filtered, queried, and prepared for arborist review, reducing time spent on field-based data collection.
Arborist Expertise
ISA Certified Arborists and urban forestry specialists review, validate, and enrich the automated outputs, focusing field verification on priority trees where professional judgment adds the most value. They refine species identification, confirm or adjust critical measurements, add management-relevant attributes, and apply QA/QC standards so the resulting dataset is defensible for operations, reporting, and risk management.
TreePlotter Integration
TreeD data is then integrated into TreePlotter, where it becomes the operational system of record for planning, maintenance, work orders, and reporting across departments. Because LiDAR capture, automation, arborist review, and TreePlotter are tightly linked, the workflow is inherently cyclical: cities can re-scan corridors, refresh automation, and iterate arborist validation over time, keeping their inventories current without rebuilding from scratch.
Jakarto and PlanIT Geo™ Exclusive Partnership
Technical depth and LiDAR expertise, integrated into the TreeD methodology
TreeD™ Inventory is powered by PlanIT Geo’s practitioner-led methodology and strengthened by our strategic partnership with Jakarto, a leader in large-scale mobile LiDAR mapping. Jakarto contributes proven capture technology, processing expertise, and a strong track record on complex urban projects, while PlanIT Geo remains responsible for inventory standards, arborist-led data enrichment, and final delivery through TreePlotter. In Canada, Jakarto also provides direct mobile LiDAR data capture services, giving agencies immediate confidence in local execution while ensuring TreeD remains an integrated, methodology-driven solution rather than a vendor-owned dataset.
