Florida’s Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program is expecting to give out $265,000 in 2021 to improve urban and community forestry across the state.

Local governments, Native American tribal governments, volunteer groups, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions that are interested in expanding their tree canopy or improving their urban forest management have until October 8th to submit an application.

There are four grant categories that are eligible for up to $20,000 in matching funds per applicant. These categories include Public Tree Canopy Improvement (Tree Planting), Tree Canopy Assessments, Urban Forest Management Plans (UFMPs), and Urban Forestry Information and Education.

PlanIT Geo™ has provided lots of relevant expertise to clients in Florida, particularly in the categories of Tree Canopy Assessments and UFMPs, and has experience helping organizations win grants. Some of our past projects include an Urban Tree Canopy Assessment for Jacksonville and the development of an Urban Forest Management Report for the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency of Miami. We are also currently working on a grant-funded project in the Florida panhandle, assessing urban tree canopy change in cities affected by Hurricane Michael in 2018.

This map shows the overall planting prioritization from Jacksonville’s Urban Tree Canopy Assessment, which combines a range of criteria, including air quality, energy conservation, stormwater reduction, vulnerable populations, low existing tree canopy, and high possible planting area.

If you would like to explore more examples of PlanIT Geo’s grant-relevant services, check out our resource library, which is full of project summaries for past tree inventories, tree canopy assessments, and urban forest management plans.

Grant applications are due Friday, October 8th by 2:00PM. For more information check out the Request for Applications page. Additionally, keep an eye out for the 2021 Managing Community Forests Grant Program, which will be releasing application details this fall. This grant program provides funding over a three period to support the progression from completing a tree inventory, to creating an urban forest management plan, and finally organizing a planting project.
